Grow-out Pangasius

Bacillary necrosis, hemorrhage, rising FCR — losing the pond

High-density pangasius easily breaks out with bacillary necrosis (Edwardsiella ictaluri) and hemorrhage when the pond environment turns bad. Than Vuong: stabilize environment + protect liver + treat the right agent.

Effective Grow-out pangasius farming

Quick answer

Successful grow-out pangasius needs: (1) managing the high-density pond — water exchange, bottom probiotics (SOILMAX New, MAX 4000), NH3/NO2 removal (YUCCA C); (2) liver and gut protection with HERB GUARD, MAX LIVER, PRO GUT plus immunity boosters AQUAMOS/BETAGLUCAN; (3) on disease: treat Edwardsiella ictaluri necrosis with FLOR-MAX, Aeromonas hemorrhage with OXYTETRA/DOXYPA, parasites with AQUA PRAZI — always observe the pre-harvest withdrawal period.

Biology & model

Grow-out pangasius: high density, FCR is key

Pangasius is raised in high-density earthen/floating ponds on pellets. Organic load and FCR decide profit — a bad environment weakens the liver, invites disease and spikes FCR.

Pond environment

Bottom & toxic-gas management at high density

Excess feed and feces build up, raising NH3/NO2/H2S and lowering bottom oxygen. Water exchange + bottom probiotics + toxic-gas removal keep the pond stable and the liver healthy.

Common diseases

Bacillary necrosis & hemorrhage — treat the right agent

Bacillary necrosis (Edwardsiella ictaluri) and Aeromonas hemorrhage cause mass mortality. Identify the agent to use antibiotics effectively and avoid resistance.

Liver & immunity

Healthy liver — strong immunity — lower disease risk

The liver is the most stressed organ in high-density pangasius. Protecting liver + gut + regular immune support helps fish cope, feed strongly and reduces antibiotic use.

Pond preparation & treatment

Get the pond right before stocking: a clean bottom, enough lime, water within targets. Parameters follow national standards and extension guidance; product doses follow Than Vuong labels.

  1. Step 1

    Drain and desludge

Drain the pond and remove wild fish. Clear the organic sludge so the bottom is flat and slopes to the outlet.

  2. Step 2

    Lime and sun-dry 2–3 days

Spread powdered lime over the bottom and banks. Use more on acid-sulphate soil.

    • Powdered lime7–10 kg/100 m²
    • Lime · acid soil12–15 kg/100 m²
  3. Step 3

    Fill through a filter net

Water depth of at least 3 m per QCVN 02-20:2014. Treat acid-sulphate or metal-laden water.

  4. Step 4

    Disinfect the water

  5. Before stocking

Build water colour, settle the pond

FYTO FLOC builds a tea colour; repeat after 3–5 days. Brew SOILMAX New with FYTO FLOC for 4–6 hours, then apply. GROWMIN goes in 24 hours before stocking.

Care by stage

From stocking to harvest, by fish size. Feed protein follows 28 TCN 188:2004 (as cited by RIA2); product doses follow the labels.

  1. Stocking

    Disease-free fingerlings, stocked when cool

    • Healthy, active, even-sized fish with a quarantine certificate. Fingerlings are usually about 40 fish/kg (≈ 25 g each); at least 10 cm per QCVN 02-20:2014.
    • Density: extension services advise 20–40 fish/m²; intensive ponds usually stock 40–60/m² (FAO).
    • Stock early morning or late afternoon; float the bags 10–15 minutes to match temperature and give a 2% salt bath for 5–10 minutes.
    • No feed on day 1; then one meal of about 0.5–0.8% of stock weight, increasing gradually.
  2. Fish 20–200 g

    Build the gut, deworm early

    • Pellets at 30% protein for 5–20 g fish and 26% for 20–200 g; 2–4 meals a day, one afternoon meal on cold days.
    • Add probiotics and yeast regularly for a healthy, absorbing gut.
    • Deworm fish under 300 g: skip feed for a day, mix AQUA PRAZI into 80% of the ration for 3 days; repeat every 25–30 days; follow with vitamins and liver support.

In the rainy season, below 28 °C water, bacillary necrosis peaks in fingerlings and juveniles (Can Tho University) — watch closely; see the protocols below.

  3. Fish 200–500 g

Protect the liver as the load climbs

    • Lower feed protein to about 22%.
    • Support the liver regularly; treat the bottom and toxic gases more often as feeding rises.
    • Fish over 300 g still need deworming about every 30 days — ask Than Vuong's technicians which product to use.
  4. Over 500 g → harvest

    Reach size, respect withdrawal

    • Feed about 18% protein once fish pass 500 g.
    • Harvest after about 7–8 months at 0.9–1.2 kg per fish (National Extension Centre).
    • Stop feeding at least 1 day before harvest; observe every label withdrawal period.
    • After harvest: remove sludge and dry the bottom for the next crop.

Frequently asked questions

Which medicine for pangasius bacillary necrosis?

Bacillary necrosis from Edwardsiella ictaluri — treat with FLOR-MAX (florfenicol, low resistance) per dose, with HERB GUARD for liver recovery and reduced feeding during treatment. Observe full withdrawal before harvest.

What FCR is good for pangasius?

Target FCR ~1.5–1.7. A rising FCR usually means weak liver, poor gut absorption or bad environment — protect the liver (HERB GUARD, MAX LIVER), stabilize the gut (PRO GUT) and treat the environment.

How to handle toxic gas in high-density pangasius ponds?

Apply SOILMAX New + MAX 4000 regularly to decompose the bottom and convert NH3/NO2; use YUCCA C or NITROBAC to absorb NH3 when high; increase water exchange and oxygen, especially late-crop.

How to treat parasites on pangasius?

Gill flukes, Trichodina, monogeneans → use AQUA PRAZI, combine with water disinfection by WORK 80 or POWER GLUTA, then re-seed probiotics.
